Routing Software

School bus routing software for districts that run their own buses

Routing software plans the stops, runs and daily routes your fleet drives, then puts that plan in front of drivers as turn-by-turn navigation and in front of families as live bus tracking.

What routing software has to do before it saves you anything

Most routing systems were built to draw a map. The work is what happens after: a driver calls out at 5:40am, a family moves mid-year, a field trip eats a bus. BusRight keeps the plan, the driver and the family on the same data, so a change made once shows up everywhere.

The map underneath the routes

Every routing system draws its lines on somebody else's map. When that map is wrong — a subdivision built last summer, a seasonal road, an address that sends navigation to a gas station — most districts file a ticket with a map vendor and wait months for the fix to reach a bus.

BusRight maintains its own mapping layer. Corrections land in days.

On top of it you set the rules your district actually runs by: roads a bus may never take, a stretch of road a route has to pass through, and pickups on the student's side of the street without a U‑turn at the stop.

Can a driver who has never run the route drive it correctly?

Turn-by-turn navigation on the tablet, not a printed sheet. A substitute who has never seen the route drives it the way the regular driver does, with every stop and every student in order.

When a stop changes, who has to be told, and how?

Count the phone calls one mid-year address change sets off. That number is your real operating cost. In BusRight you change the stop once: the driver's tablet picks it up on the next run and the family sees the new time without calling dispatch.

A route compared against its plan, stop by stop Two parallel timelines for the same route. The upper line shows the planned arrival time at each stop. The lower line shows the actual arrival time, running nine minutes behind from the third stop onward. Route 12 · AM 9 min behind PLANNED 7:027:087:147:217:29 ACTUAL 7:027:09 7:237:307:38 Every stop still ahead updates with it.

6:12 in the morning

Two drivers called out overnight. One bus is nine minutes behind. A parent is already on the phone.

Dispatch shows every route running right now against the route that was planned — where each bus is, which stops it has made, which it has not, and what that does to the stops still ahead.

A substitute is assigned to a route for the dates you need, and the tablet in that bus has the route before the driver does. Dispatchers get a role of their own, so they can do all of this without being able to change a route.

Does the system know who actually rode?

Safety Pass scans students on and off the bus, so ridership is a record rather than an estimate. That record is what state reporting, funding counts and the "where is my child" call all run on.

The part of the job that isn't a bus route

A coach needs a bus on Saturday. A music teacher needs three. At most districts that is a paper form, two phone calls and an argument in June about who pays for it.

Trips live in the same system as routes. Staff submit them on a request form your district designs, they move through the approvals your district requires, drivers see and bid on what is open, and the invoice at the end reflects the trip that actually ran.

Same calendar, same fleet, same driver list.

More than 450 districts across 37 states run on BusRight. A few of the things that tend to come up on a demo:

  • Nightly roster sync from your student information system
  • Attendance and walk boundaries drawn on the map
  • A public stop lookup families can use without an account
  • Transportation registration forms, sent before routing season
  • Route sheets, student sheets and bus passes, generated
  • Saved views for the lists you rebuild every week
  • Guided rollover into the next school year
  • Run history for every route, scheduled against actual

Funding, reporting deadlines and driver requirements differ by state. We keep a sourced guide for each one.

“BusRight has been a game-changer for safety and communication. With substitute drivers, it’s tough when they don’t know a route, now they have clear directions, and we can track and monitor buses in real time.”

Barb Schwamman
Superintendent and Director of District and School Support - Osage Community School

“BusRight has raised the bar with driver tablets, parent communications, and easy route design, and they're always willing to listen and deliver on our needs. I'm proud to partner with BusRight.”

Marc Medina
President of NYAPT, Region 1 Director of NAPT, Supervisor of Transportation Farmingdale Union Free School District

“A parent called, worried her child hadn't gotten off the bus. Thanks to Safety Pass, I could immediately confirm the student had never scanned on and quickly found him safe at an after-school program. Without it, we'd have been making radio calls across 50+ buses.”

Devin O'Bryan
Transportation Director - Nelson County School District

“BusRight simplifies the whole process of moving students safely. Drivers get clear, turn-by-turn directions, and parents can see their child’s bus location in real time. When we’re short on drivers, we can even merge routes on the spot, it’s that easy”

Brandon Caldwell
Transportation Director - Madison School District

"BusRight has saved us $989,000 in the first year. I can't think of another tool in the district that has had such a profound impact on student safety, while also strengthening the financial position of the school."

Gregory Mott
Superintendent - Poughkeepsie City School District
