Nelson County Schools serves over 4,000 students across 424 square miles of rural Kentucky. Its unique geography means a drive from one end of the county to the other takes over an hour. When Transportation Director Devin O'Bryan set out to modernize a system still running on paper route sheets, he turned to BusRight. From Paper Route Sheets to Data-First Operations

Devin O'Bryan's path to Transportation Director at the Nelson County school district started behind the wheel of a school bus. During his time as a driver, Devin experienced a system void of technology: paper route sheets that were rarely accurate, no visibility into where buses were once they left the lot, and no way to account for students between pickup and drop-off. "When I was driving, we really had no system," O'Bryan recalls. "It was the old pen-and-paper style. Go find the red barn and turn around."

After a legacy routing product failed and a second vendor's tablets didn't deliver, O'Bryan spent a year and a half researching the right partner. With drivers ranging in age from 21 to over 80, he knew another false start with a new technology partner wasn't an option. "You don't want to keep making these shifts. I knew that we had to get it right."

What drew him to BusRight was their partnership-oriented approach and ability to build solutions around the district’s specific needs. "It wasn't trying to take other stuff and make it work," O'Bryan says. "It was, 'Hey, we're going to build it to be what it needs to be.'"

Shortly after BusRight went live in Nelson County, the system was tested when a late bus required students to be rerouted quickly. Instead of a flood of radio chatter across 54 routes, O'Bryan pulled up the live map in BusRight and coordinated the transfer in seconds. "I was able just to look and say, 'Hey, I need you to stop here, grab their middle school kids so we can make the transfer and get everybody where they need to be on time.'"

A Game Changer for Substitute Drivers and Parents Alike

Like districts nationwide, Nelson County has faced driver shortages, but has never canceled a route. BusRight's tablet navigation has been central to that. Before the platform, putting a substitute driver on an unfamiliar route required days of ride-alongs and memorization. Now, O'Bryan points them to the tablet. 

"There were several days that I sent people out what I would call blind — they'd never been on the route, didn't know where they were going. I'm like, 'Hey, the tablet will get you there.' Before, I would have needed a couple of days to go over it with them. We don't have to do that now." BusRight has also changed how the transportation office handles parents who call to check in on the bus. Because BusRight’s platform is all-in-one, the ETAs shown in the Parent app match the GPS on the bus driver’s tablet. O'Bryan's team can then verify bus locations in real time rather than fielding concerns without visibility.

Data-Driven Transportation Decisions with BusRight

For O'Bryan, quantifiable data is what separates effective transportation leadership from the status quo. Before BusRight, once a bus left the lot, his team had almost no insight into what was happening until it returned. Now, every route generates real ridership numbers, on-time performance, and student scan records. O'Bryan uses all of the data in BusRight to make important transportation decisions. 

"Everything I do is based on data," he says. "Anytime you can use data to make decisions and be able to use that data to explain why you're changing something — it makes sense, and it's not just a knee-jerk reaction."

That philosophy, combined with BusRight’s data, has exposed inefficiencies that the district couldn't see before. Drivers weren't always reporting when students stopped riding the bus. BusRight's scan data shows actual ridership, replacing assumptions with evidence.

This visibility is now enabling long-term system optimization, including evaluating route efficiency and identifying opportunities to reduce unnecessary routes while maintaining or improving service levels.
