Student transportation in Alabama: FAQ for district transportation leaders

Answers to common questions from Alabama transportation directors, with a link to the official source for every answer. Updated October 2026. State rules change, so confirm details with ALSDE before you act on them.

How does Alabama calculate transportation operations funding?

The state guide to allocations builds the transportation operations allocation from 3 parts. Positions are earned from the number of buses running morning and afternoon routes plus a 20% spare allowance. Fuel is annual route miles divided by fleet miles per gallon, multiplied by projected fuel cost. Maintenance is qualifying buses times a rate the state sets each year. Because route counts and mileage drive the allocation, accurate route data supports your funding.

How does fleet renewal funding work?

Alabama provides a fleet renewal allocation for each eligible route bus that is 10 years old or newer and runs morning and afternoon routes. Fleet renewal funds must be spent on new bus purchases or on debt payments for new buses. Pairing this allocation with a long-range fleet plan helps your district time replacements well.

What changed in the FY27 education budget?

The FY27 Education Trust Fund comparison sheet from the Legislative Services Agency lists the Transportation Program at about $586 million, up from about $479 million in FY26. That is an increase of more than 20%. Fuel prices remain a factor to watch during the year.

New drivers attend a 12-hour ALSDE New School Bus Driver Certification Class, score at least 80% on a written test and pass a 3-part performance test. Certificates expire each December 31, and drivers renew by attending a 4-hour recertification class.
