Answers to common questions from Wyoming transportation directors, with a link to the official source for every answer. Updated October 2026. State rules change, so confirm details with the Wyoming Department of Education before you act on them.

How does Wyoming reimburse transportation costs?

Under W.S. 21-13-320, the state computes an amount for each district equal to what the district actually spent in the previous school year. That covers maintaining and operating routes to and from school plus approved student activity trips. Bus purchases and leases are reimbursed using base prices set by the department, with purchases paid at 1/5 of the base price each year over 5 years.

What do districts report for reimbursement?

Chapter 20 of the Department of Education rules requires each district to report actual fleet miles. Multipurpose vehicles need a full mileage log showing students carried plus beginning and ending mileage for every trip. Mileage and rider counts by route make each report faster to complete.

What does Wyoming require of school bus drivers?

W.S. 21-3-131 requires each district to set and maintain minimum standards for people who operate school buses. Districts check each new hire's driving record and keep a copy of the federal medical examiner's certificate on file. Every school bus driver completes at least 6 hours of training each year.
